Member Services / Health & Safety
Between 11 and 13 April twelve members of the Civil Nuclear Police Federation attended a Health and Safety Representatives Course facilitated by Mr Tom Cullen and held at the Glendower Hotel in Lytham St Anns. Successful completion of this course now allows them to undertake the role of a Safety Representative as described in the Safety Reprsentatives and Safety Committees Regulations 1977 which are;- 1. To investigate possible dangers at work, the causes of accidents there and general complaints by employees on health and safety and welfare issues and to take these matters up with the employer 2. To carry out inspections of the workplace particularly following accidents, diseases or other events 3. To represent employees in discussions with health and safety inspectors and to receive information from those inspectors and to attend meetings of safety committees. Terry Wroe , Civil Nuclear Police Federation Health and Safety Leader says: 'I was very pleased with the response by the members of the Federation who have volunteered to represent their colleagues as Safety Representatives, and in particular by those members who are relatively young in service. The Health and Safety Act of 1974 gave our membership, as employees, the same rights in relation to health and safety at work as any member of a recognised Trade Union. This means that by law our employer must consult, not just the members of the CNP Federation, but all employees, on health and safety matters. This is very important, particularly in the areas and with some of the equipment that we use, as consultation can create and maintain a safer and healthier working environment. Ideally the Federation would like two Safety Representatives at each Operational Unit and of course Departments and Operational Support Units must be represented.'
